Design in Times of Crisis.
This year's edition of the competition for the best design diploma from public art schools takes place at a time when it becomes legitimate to ask about the function of design in reality. A time of pandemic and now war reevaluates many phenomena and makes us begin to see the power of human solidarity, empathy and closeness in life. Design as a tool to help people in everyday life is an essential element that makes it possible to live more, more fully and more consciously. How did the young graduates of public art schools cope with this task?
HEALTH - Design in health care is a frequent topic of graduation theses. This year's graduates were interested in how touch can have a therapeutic effect and how to translate this into an object, what an ecg holder for children might look like, how a device to support the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis should look and function, and how space can make people with autism function well.
EDUCATE! - Education is paramount. Our future depends on how and what we teach our children. Education in times of constant distraction should be attractive and given in a modern way. However, it does not apply only to children, because we live in a time of new phenomena and new issues. This year's graduation themes included works on silence, non-heteronormativity, the function of the forest, the ecosystem, women in bicycle culture or the history of Szczecin.
SPACE - How does human life co-create space? How can a properly designed environment make people able to get rid of trauma? How to live well in the city? How to design vertically? What makes it possible for us to talk about well-executed revitalization? These questions are answered by the works in the space category, which deal not only with the role of urban space in the functioning of society, the adaptation of public buildings, the creation of zones of rest and relaxation, but also the difficult topic of domestic violence.
LIVE BETTER! - Design should be functional and useful. It is supposed to improve projects already implemented, make people at work and at leisure get a tool that positively affects the quality of their activities. "User friendly" is no longer an invention, but as Robert Fabricani and Cliff Kuang - authors of a book with this title - explain: "design requires respect for users' expectations and an understanding of the nuances of their lives." The "Live Better" category includes products, applications and typefaces. Their features are very different - and what they have in common is precisely the user-friendliness that makes living just that much better.
THE FUTURE IS NOW! - Natalia Hatalska in her book about the future "The Age of Paradoxes. Will technology save us?" - asks the title question about loneliness, manipulation and misinformation. Young designers, on the other hand, try with their works to answer the question: what kind of designs do we need to function in the future, as well as how to deal with today's dysfunctions, which are developing at a rapid pace, posing a growing problem.
VIVA L'ARTE! - Design is part of the visual arts. It has been fed by art since the dawn of time, and aesthetics is an important part of many projects. Among this year's diplomas were works that emphasize the combination of design and art.
